If you thought Nokia had been relegated to the coffers of national nostalgia, you need to think again. After a hiatus of almost two years, Nokia is all set to make a grand comeback into the smartphone market.
HMD Global announced the launch of Nokia’s first Android Smartphone – the Nokia 6, which will be available in China soon. With an earlier announcement that the company will be releasing six phones in the course of 2017, things are just getting started.
HMD hopes to move numbers by launching their mid-range priced phone in a dynamic market like China where Nokia has traditionally enjoyed a loyal fan base. As a growth market, China is expected to deliver a better performance over the more stagnant markets of US & Europe. With a competitive pricing of 1699 CNY (approx Rs.17000) Nokia hopes to go head-to-head with accessible brands like Xiaomi.
Why not a Flagship Phone
If you were a company making a comeback would you launch with your best product or the second best, to test the waters? Nokia’s strategy seems to be to capitalise on a growing buzz and positive media to launch their arsenal of mid and high-level phones, which will eventually cash into their flagship. Rumour has it that their flagship phone will take on the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S8.
The Nokia 6 sports a sleek aluminium unibody shell, with a fingerprint scanner, a 5.5” screen and a full HD resolution. The display is said to provide an incredible colour reproduction wrapped in 2.5D Gorilla Glass.
The smartphone comes with the latest gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with a 4GB RAM and a storage capacity of 64GB. What’s more, is that it runs the latest version of Android Nougat 7.0 out of the box.
The phone has dual sim capacity and is powered by a non-removable 3,000mAh battery. It also features an impressive 16MP f/2.0 PDAF rear camera with dual-LED Flash and a front facing camera of 8MP f/2.0. Nokia 6 packs Dolby Atmos-powered dual amplifier speakers which claim to give a higher voice and a deeper bass sound.
While it is exclusively available in China, there is no word on its release or pricing in India. However, sources tell us that the Nokia 6 will make its way to India post MWC 2017 in March after the company has announced a Flagship phone for 2017. The phone is expected to be priced around the Rs. 10000 price mark in India. Hopefully, things only get exciting from here.
